Septum
The name Pregrad was mentioned for the first time on the 9th. August 1334 in the statutes of the Zagreb Chapter.
The statutes were drawn up by Archdeacon Ivan of Gorica, and proclaimed by Bishop Ladislav Kobol on the same day. The parish is certainly much older, because it was declared the first in the archdeaconry of Zagorje in the list, and it was awarded a great honor. How the Barrier got its name is anyone’s guess.

History
In the Middle Ages, the Pregrad region belonged to the Kostel manor. On the northern slopes of Kunagora, the remains of the Kostelgrad fortress can still be seen today. The name Pregrad was mentioned for the first time in 1334. year in the statutes of the Zagreb Chapter where the parish of St. Emerika in Kostel. There are several hypotheses about the creation of the name. The first interprets that the bed of the river Kosteljina, which passes through that place, was blocked by some kind of barrier. Another version says that the owner of Kostelgrad, Juraj Branderbuški, stationed his defense troops “in front of the city”, on the slopes of Kunagora, and that is how the name Pregrad was born.
Position
The city has an area of 67 km 2 , and according to the last population census in 2011. has 6594 inhabitants. The distance from the highway and railway is 25 km, and from Franjo Tuđman airport 71 km. The barrier is 66 km from Zagreb, 209 km from Rijeka, 129 km from Ljubljana, and 322 km from Vienna. In the period between the two world wars, Pregrada was the strongest craft center in Croatia in terms of population. At that time, it also had the world-famous pharmaceutical factory Thierry. It was on the once important traffic route Zagreb-Vienna.
Why the name Partition?
Where Pregrada got its name can only be guessed. Does it come from some kind of “barrier” with which the narrowness of the Kosteljina river was blocked, or did the owner of Kostel, Juraj Branderburški, place his defense troops “in front of the city” on the slopes of Kunagora, and that is where the name Barrier comes from. Both thoughts have their basis, but there is no reliable evidence for either assumption. The location of the town of Pregrada is more favorable in contrast to the location of the surrounding settlements and municipalities, mainly because the area itself enables the further expansion of the settlement in the valley of the Kosteljina river.
Economy
Position of the Partition
The real advantage of Pregrada’s position came to the fore only in the middle of the 19th century. century, i.e. at the time when the autarkic rural-manorial economy (concentrated around manorial castles) was replaced by a new, money economy.
Then there is a need to create regional centers that would play the role of mediators in the exchange of rural and processing economy and would be the center of new, territorial-administrative units – districts and municipalities. From the middle of the 19th century, Pregrada assumed the role of the main central settlement of the surrounding area – it was the center of the municipality and district until the new administrative-territorial division in 1955. years. With the abolition of districts, the municipality of Pregrada was established, which existed until 1962. when it was annexed to the municipality of Krapina . This partnership lasted until 1978. when the Parliament of the Republic of Croatia re-established the municipality of Pregrada with the Law on Amendments to the Law on Municipal Areas. In January 1997 Pregrada gets the status of a city on the basis of the number of functions it offers to the population, on the basis of the activities the population engages in and on the basis of its history.
In the period between the two world wars, Pregrada was the strongest craft center in Croatia in terms of population. At that time, it also had the world-famous pharmaceutical factory Thierry. It was on the once important traffic route Zagreb-Vienna.

History of the city
Parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary – “Zagorje Cathedral”
The church was built in the neoclassical style, the construction was started by pastor Josip Karlo Tuškan, and it was completed in 1818. by the efforts of Zagreb bishop Maksimilijan Vrhovac. The building is 38 meters long and 19 meters wide, the facade of the church is dominated by two high bell towers (45 meters) and a triangular gable with a fresco of the Assumption of the Mother of God.
Maria is especially venerated in the parish as “Our Lady of Kunagora”. Because of the magnificent building and two towers, it is called the “Zagorje Cathedral”. It is connected to the cathedral in Zagreb in a special way: the cathedral organ with exceptionally high quality sound and the large altarpiece of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary were transferred to it. In 1846 The parish church bought the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary altarpiece from Kaptol. It was commissioned by Bishop Aleksandar Alagović, and is the work of Viennese master Johann Zieggler. It was painted under the influence of Titian’s Assunta, which is located in Venice. The organ was built by Franjo Focht on the order of Bishop Alagović, for the first church in Zagreb. It turned out that they were unsuitable for such a large church, so in 1854 sold to the Church of the Assumption in Pregrada for 600 forints. Three manuals are built into the player, and registers are arranged in four rows on both sides of the manual. In the middle of the chest is the insignia of the episcopal authority: a miter, a bishop’s staff and a cross, and below them is the coat of arms of Bishop Alagović.

Dubrava Castle
Dubrava Castle
Dubrava Castle is located on a gentle slope at the southern entrance to Pregrada. Today’s situation speaks of a series of phases of partitioning and additions, of which the rounded corner tower and one wing with arcades on two floors remain. The castle was built by the Keglevic family, and then it changed owners – the Limburg-Stirum, Erdödy families (Countess Sidonija Rubido Erdödy, the first Croatian opera prima donna and muse of the Illyrian movement), the Petazzi, the Oršići, the Slavetići, the Kuhtići, and Jakov Badl, who became famous for the arrangement of the bathing area in the nearby Krapinske Toplice in 1862.
Along with the castle, farm buildings and the surrounding estate have been preserved, and inside there is a beautiful rococo stove. The castle is privately owned and is known as Dobrava Castle.
