Bedekovčan lakes
They were created by digging clay for bricks and tiles about a hundred years ago. The total number of lakes was seven, but today five remain.
The first lakes created since 1886. until 1937 They no longer exist because they were buried due to the expansion of the factory.
The lakes are up to 5 meters deep, and in order they are: First Lake, Second Lake, Granje Lake, Lake near the Fisherman’s House and Blue Lake, and they are managed by a sports fishing association. Promenades around the lake, beautiful nature and greenery, the singing of various birds, fishing, a fisherman’s house that offers refreshments, are only part of what makes visitors return to Bedekovčina.
The popular Bajeri is a favorite bathing spot and promenade, but also the venue for numerous events such as the Fair and exhibition of Zagorje wines, the music festival Igrajte nam, mužikaši and the drama festival Summer in the Bajeri.
More about bajeres…
The current lakes were created in the period of 1937. until 1950 years. The depth of the lake is up to 8 meters. When digging at that depth, water sources were encountered that filled the excavations.
The lakes are interconnected and the excess water goes into the Krapina river. When digging at that depth, there was a source of water, which prevented further work, excavations. Because of this, embankments with a height of 2 m were built almost every 10 mi in order to prevent the penetration of water to the excavation site. Therefore, the lakes were filled with underground and surface, precipitation and drainage water. The quality of the lake water 10-15 years ago was drinkable, so it was designated as a possible reserve in case of natural disasters or war. The lakes are regularly stocked by the fishing community with 3-5 tons of fish per year. Of the fish species, there are carp, grass carp, perch, pike and flounder. The lake is specially arranged for breeding young carp and perch with an annual production of 2-3 tons.
